The Kanjivaram saree also known as the Kanchipuram saree, is one of India’s most treasured handloom creations. Originating from the temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, this saree is a symbol of luxury, tradition and unmatched artistry. Worn especially during weddings and auspicious occasions, the Kanjivaram saree holds a deep cultural and historical significance that has endured for centuries.
The roots of the Kanjivaram saree date back over 400 years, during the reign of the Chola dynasty. Skilled weavers migrated to Kanchipuram and began weaving silk saree inspired by temple architecture, nature and mythology. These weavers are believed to be descendants of Sage Markanda, the divine weaver of the gods.
Historically, Kanjivaram saree were woven exclusively for royalty, temple rituals and aristocratic families. The use of pure mulberry silk combined with real gold and silver zari sets these saree apart from others. Over time, the craft flourished under royal patronage and became an integral part of South Indian heritage.
The Kanjivaram saree has earned global admiration for its craftsmanship and authenticity. In 2005, it received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, ensuring that only saree woven in Kanchipuram using traditional methods can be called true Kanjivaram sarees. This recognition protects the artisans and preserves the originality of the craft.
